( Moaning, laughter, lewd innuendo — the fixtures of the House of Dew's channels. Until, a steeled voice cuts way: )

Tamaiu, if you please. Impress on your ladies the virtue of silence for the next hour.

( All too suddenly, betraying how often the mistress of the house listens in, the cacophony of sound dispels. He continues: )

Good afternoon. You’ve made rather a mess of things, haven’t you?

I made my first fortune in Sa-Hareth. Inevitably, through sales of salt. Now, this was before, when death was still a reliable constant, and trade margin weren’t unhelpfully eroded by the competition’s ability to deploy dead contingents that require no rest, no feeding, and minimal attendance while they operate the production line. I assure you, immortality is infertile ground for business.

( A moment, for amateurs to appreciate this economic downturn. )

At this time, I volunteer no name. You do not require it. Allocate me one as you please. I am a merchant, by trade. I am accustomed to a degree of discretion. But I have no guarantee that you would offer me the same courtesy in the event of your capture, and the ambitions of this enterprise frankly surpass you. It is of utmost importance that I survive.

It is of secondary relevance that you do the same. But my collaborators and I have allocated a not insubstantial volume of coin, sweat, blood and personal sacrifice to progress your escape and survival. The hope, the gain, and the only purpose of this operation is to remove you from Akhuras and direct you to pastures new. Any alternative allows for Unhalad, his siblings and their masters to utilise you in a war that has devastated our world.

( Another pause, measured. He is accustomed to the protocols of rhetoric. )

To be clear. You are not so naïve to assume our first efforts didn’t study the merits of your murder. We tested this on a batch. Regrettably, our enemies proved sufficiently apt to resurrect their captives and use them after.

We will therefore proceed with extraction. Some of the standing eastern portals still offer the possibility of transfer to other worlds. Although… most have not been tested in generations, and we may need to deepen our voyage east, if and when the beacons cannot accommodate us. The safety of portal transportation to your persons is candidly immaterial to us and remains your concern.

( Be that as it may. Another moment's hesitance: )

My part in this endeavour is to secure information on the portals and their location, along with facilitating transit, on occasion. You will contribute with coin, with labour, with discipline. Begin by assisting Haltham and Karsa as much as possible.

Now. If you attracted Unhalad’s attention, it is not unfair to assume you were all previously situated in a position of power. You are used to being heard, perhaps also heeded. Some of you may have commanded every room you stepped in.

Except for this one. I am master here. You are merchandise. I have no interest in hearing objections of stupidity, vulgarity or sentiment. Any other questions, proposals or comments may be submitted in an orderly manner.

( And perfectly civil once more: ) Tamaiu, if you please again. My thanks and regards to your ladies.

( This is the super bright and cheery answer: )

Didn't make sense to ask the undead, so I figured, why not!

[ Xunxian takes a moment to consider all the information between the two messages for a long moment, before, well, using the crystal to speak out for the first time. ]

Master Merchant, I would like to begin with appreciation for us being retrieved at all. For all the bluntness of the words, it is easy to see that you speak and act out of necessity - you do not wish for our presence any more than we wish to be here.

And, furthermore, I do appreciate that you gave us the one thing that can make a difference to us all, whether or not all realize. Information. Harsh truth is always preferable to ignorance, after all.

With full awareness that you do not owe us any further answers, I would still dare to ask a couple of questions that I think would be good for us to know. Please do not misunderstand, I am not attempting to bargain. What you have already done, even if it was out of necessity rather than goodwill, is more than enough for me to at least try to give what you have requested.

The first one is: Aside from delivering ourselves to Unhalad, what things we might do could put you - and those under your command - into more danger? It would be important, I should think, to know the lines we must not cross before we do. As an addition to this question, it might be good to know if such hard lines will be the same where you would be sending us next, or would those be for this place alone?

And the second question might be possible to redirect to an appropriate repository of information, should such exist. How did the war start? You mentioned that it has devastated the world, but if we are to avoid aggravating it, we need to know enough about it to not add more fuel to the fire.

Thank you again for the time you have taken to talk with us.

Do you have any recommendations for an approach doing so here? Particularly if what we're all hoping for is higher returns.

[ Oh, he is calm, and that was far from excessive by his standards, but he's unlikely to correct that part. At this juncture, at least. ]

Of course, of course, and those do seem reasonable requests. Nothing about this place seems simple, so I would not call them easy, yet, but reasonable has the advantage of making sense to us.

As to which war... the one that made death less than a reliable constant, preferably. But if you think a different one more important to understand, I would hear about that, too. Or instead.
weifinder: (mmhm | so i pray)

[personal profile] weifinder 2021-04-17 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes.

( Also: sure, he has faith in his ability to roll with the punches and make things up as he goes, but at the same time, he doesn't know this landscape or even this method of auctioning. Not just lacking the charisma to inflate a mercantile reputation he doesn't have, but no knowledge to fake it until he makes it. )

How high would you expect the percental fee to be?
topoiran: (Well)

[personal profile] topoiran 2021-04-17 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
So the undead were not of the war which ah, 'devastated your world'?

[ Actual hint of surprise here. Then again, if he knew, he wouldn't have asked.

Probably.

Haltham and Karsa.

[ Sure, he hadn't spoken to Karsa, but Haltham had been chatty enough. ]

Those that came to release us from our bondage.

Ah.

So were they created as part of the war, or in the aftermath?

And Ylva?

[ He still wasn't sure why he of all of them had been assigned a body guard, though after my king he was started to expect it was mockery. ]

Is she meant to accompany outside the city as well?

Any recommendation on whose eyes here are more truthful than not in assessments? I don't pretend to be a merchant, so while certain people may not have issue finding ways around traditional means of entering specific markets, having independent success within it is a different thing.
weifinder: (cup | i wanna help you)

[personal profile] weifinder 2021-04-17 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, good, does that mean you're volunteering?

( He says that nice and upbeat, followed by a sigh. )

I was not assuming you wanted to handle things more directly, but I appreciate if you do.

[ ... well. The obfuscating a straightforward question is clear enough in and of itself. ]

Thank you for your answers, Master Merchant.

Oh, and one last question. Should you succeed to send us off where you mean to - would that be outside of the territory of the undead, in some way, or more out of reach of those who drew us here, such as deep into the territory of those hostile to them?

[ It grates under his skin, his lips pulling into a slight sneer, but at least this was over audio. ]

As her contract is not with me, it is reasonable to enquire as to the conditions that were set.

[ A pause, and then pointedly: ]

Loyalty is not something I have ever had to purchase, no. [ Even as he said it, suddenly he thought of Mu-Yeong. He stomach twisted bitterly, and he bit it back as best he could. Loyalty. What did he know of loyalty, beyond desperate men scrambling for their lives and corrupt officials happy to take anyone else's?

That said, he'd made up his mind. ]

I won't require her services.
