( Moaning, laughter, lewd innuendo — the fixtures of the House of Dew's channels. Until, a steeled voice cuts way: )

Tamaiu, if you please. Impress on your ladies the virtue of silence for the next hour.

( All too suddenly, betraying how often the mistress of the house listens in, the cacophony of sound dispels. He continues: )

Good afternoon. You’ve made rather a mess of things, haven’t you?

I made my first fortune in Sa-Hareth. Inevitably, through sales of salt. Now, this was before, when death was still a reliable constant, and trade margin weren’t unhelpfully eroded by the competition’s ability to deploy dead contingents that require no rest, no feeding, and minimal attendance while they operate the production line. I assure you, immortality is infertile ground for business.

( A moment, for amateurs to appreciate this economic downturn. )

At this time, I volunteer no name. You do not require it. Allocate me one as you please. I am a merchant, by trade. I am accustomed to a degree of discretion. But I have no guarantee that you would offer me the same courtesy in the event of your capture, and the ambitions of this enterprise frankly surpass you. It is of utmost importance that I survive.

It is of secondary relevance that you do the same. But my collaborators and I have allocated a not insubstantial volume of coin, sweat, blood and personal sacrifice to progress your escape and survival. The hope, the gain, and the only purpose of this operation is to remove you from Akhuras and direct you to pastures new. Any alternative allows for Unhalad, his siblings and their masters to utilise you in a war that has devastated our world.

( Another pause, measured. He is accustomed to the protocols of rhetoric. )

To be clear. You are not so naïve to assume our first efforts didn’t study the merits of your murder. We tested this on a batch. Regrettably, our enemies proved sufficiently apt to resurrect their captives and use them after.

We will therefore proceed with extraction. Some of the standing eastern portals still offer the possibility of transfer to other worlds. Although… most have not been tested in generations, and we may need to deepen our voyage east, if and when the beacons cannot accommodate us. The safety of portal transportation to your persons is candidly immaterial to us and remains your concern.

( Be that as it may. Another moment's hesitance: )

My part in this endeavour is to secure information on the portals and their location, along with facilitating transit, on occasion. You will contribute with coin, with labour, with discipline. Begin by assisting Haltham and Karsa as much as possible.

Now. If you attracted Unhalad’s attention, it is not unfair to assume you were all previously situated in a position of power. You are used to being heard, perhaps also heeded. Some of you may have commanded every room you stepped in.

Except for this one. I am master here. You are merchandise. I have no interest in hearing objections of stupidity, vulgarity or sentiment. Any other questions, proposals or comments may be submitted in an orderly manner.

( And perfectly civil once more: ) Tamaiu, if you please again. My thanks and regards to your ladies.

Nobly done.

[He's possibly been spending too much time around Archeval bc if that wasn't layered with sarcasm. He's a touch too livid to connect with the softer sentiment behind those words- the one that speaks to the guilt and regret in his own heart- but it will come]

Did you even feel regret for that choice, for the lives that were brought here absent of their own will and condemned for it?

Yet the past informs present action, so as not to repeat it. We won't be surprised hearing of this, but if there are names which do, or appearances which mislead...

( he trails off pointedly.

it's not ask that he reacts to know, but no one deserves to pass and be contained and not be known to those who followed, no matter how equally unwilling.
)

They deserve remembering, too.

( another pause. but still, even more practical concerns. )

Beyond that--our immediate direction eastward, what possible political, geographic landscape will we be walking into next? Secondarily, do you know of a discrete means of engaging with the upcoming auctions on any exclusive level? Haltham had some concept, curious if one from within the trade has wisdom to lend in guidance.

I meant BEFORE you suffered consequences for it, you bloodbonnet!

[ This is the kind of message Five expected, or something like it, days before now. Everything about it reminds him of someone enough to be struck by it instantly, but he's thankfully older now. Practiced.

Except that he still doesn't know where his siblings are and 'tested on a batch' does something to his insides. So he listens very carefully before he responds. ]

I've got my own ideas, if you're interested in efficiency. And a few more, assuming you're expecting another shipment. [ See? Perfectly calm, ignoring the hammering in his chest. ] At your convenience.

I normally charge a fee to call men 'Master'.

'Merchandise' holds the implication we are at some point to be sold, and are worth more to you intact than not. As that is clearly not the case, why not simply admit you've rounded us up as slaves?

Ah, I do so love the illusion of freedom. With all these thoughtful amenities, I don't even miss home.

My commitment does not come cheap. We will not speak of my discipline.

[ A slightly leading statement, perhaps. Mingyu's discipline is immaculate, it just doesn't take the form anyone here is expecting. He, as ever, requires the right motivation. ]

[ Weighing the options. Okay. ]

First, as many have pointed out, this method of communication is flawed. Anything I suggest could be intercepted. [ So. ] Speaking in person would be the most secure option, but I'm gathering that you won't be meeting us at the next checkpoint.

It's all a game. Especially for those with more money than decency.

The lives of your lessers are your pawns, your rooks, your knights, your bishops. Only your survival is paramount, right?

[ And he could be your queen, babey. ]

What else could this be but a game?

I do agree I'm a knife. And I don't begrudge it at all. On the contrary, I'm entertained.

It's so hard to find a rich daddy to talk down to me just right.

I have a personal interest in the portals, and I have a friend who may have a stroke if not removed from the undead situation or even hears the barest suggestion that we may incidentally aid them. I'll play, daddy dearest.

Just keep talking dirty to me, okay?

[ That means there's a method to keeping the lines locked down, or otherwise, she only closes the channels for him.

He does at least appreciate that he doesn't call him 'boy'. ]

In that case. You must know the value of your... cargo. With the limitations of your current extraction team, why not expand your capabilities?

I don't have to tell you were were lucky to escape in the number that we did. At least some of us would be better suited.

[ He hates a lot of things about this. A lot of things. It makes the righteous fury rise up within him, and he breathes out slowly to smother it down. He did command every room he stepped in. And he will not let a mere merchant talk down to him like this. ]

So you treat the symptoms and not the disease. [ Flatly. Bluntly. ]

We will leave. [ As if he spoke for everyone, but, well, Prince-ing dies hard. ] But surely it would benefit you more if the means of bringing us here in the first place were destroyed? You speak of us being put in his grasp, but not how or why.

Men who are willing to use the dead to subjugate their people do not seem like those that would be greatly inconvenienced by our departure.
